It’s certainly an extraordinary picture, and one that would have dominated The Sun’s front page if we weren’t all trapped in the terminal decline of Jade Goody – Frank Bruno shaking hands with Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe during a visit to Broadmoor … while a cigar-chomping Sir Jimmy Savile looks on. You really could not make it up.
But why now? Why has this picture, taken in 1991, suddenly entered the public domain? We have been told in recent weeks that Sutcliffe’s lawyers are trying to “have him declared sane” and so secure a definite release date. The cynics amongst us will surely be stroking imaginary beards…
