FT’s Pretzlik makes jaw-dropping move

By Axegrinder axeblog

A week in journalism, like politics, can be a long time. Just the other day, Axegrinder was talking about young Charlie Pretzlik, an assistant editor at the Financial Times, as a possible successor to the editor, Lionel Barber.

After all, Will Lewis (Daily Telegraph) and James Harding (The Times) who are both editors now, come from the FT stable. Now, Pretzl (as he is fondly known by some, after the New York bread snack) has decided to throw in the journalistic towel and instead seek a crust in the Square Mile.

Early in the new year, he’s off to JPMorgan Cazenove, where he will join its investment banking division as a vice-president. Like so many City types, he first cut his teeth on the Daily Telegraph City pages under Neil Collins.

However, back at the coalface, colleagues at the FT were amazed at his decision. Says one: “We had no idea about this and jaws were dropping when we came to work on Monday morning and heard the news. There is much speculation about who his successor will be.”

Watch this space, then.
