Dangers for journalists working in Jaffna

By Julie Tomlin GR

Press freedom groups have called for an independent investigation unit to be set up to crimes against journalists.

At least seven media workers, including two journalists, have been killed in Sri Lanka since May 2006, according to a report on the press in northern Sri Lanka by Reporters Without Borders and International Media Support released today.

One journalist is missing, at least three media outlets have been  attacked, and dozens of journalists have been forced to flee the area or abandoned journalism.

Some of the deaths have been blamed on state security forces, some on paramilitaries seen allied to the government and some on the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels. But there have been no convictions.

An International Press Freedom Commission returned to Sri Lanka in July to look at how pressures on journalists have increased in the conflict . Reporters Without Borders published nine recommendations for improving press freedom in Sri Lanka.

Around a dozen mostly minority Tamil journalists and media workers have been killed in Sri Lanka since 2005 Reuters reports.
