All
the President’s Men has been voted best media movie in an online vote
set up by www.allmediascotland.com. The film, directed by Alan J.
Pakula, charts the investigations of Washington Post journalists Bob
Woodward and Carl Bernstein who exposed the Watergate scandal that led
to president Richard Nixon’s resignation. It picked up 33.1 per cent of
the vote and was chosen from a shortlist of 10 films.
Second
favourite was Sandy Mackendrick’s Sweet Smell of Success with 16.6 per
cent, about a powerful New York newspaper columnist who hires a sleazy
press agent to break up an affair between his sister and a jazz
musician. His Girl Friday , The Insider , The Paper and Ace in the Hole
were the next most popular choices. The vote came ahead of a short
season of films about the media which will be screened at the Edinburgh
Filmhouse in April.
