Xplode signs exclusive deal with Tesco

By Press Gazette

A new magazine for seven- to 11-yearolds will be funded by and only available in Tesco.

Xplode, a magazine billed as the next step on from BBC’s Learning is Fun, launches this month in the supermarket chain nationwide. Published by Bathbased James Pembroke Publishing, Tesco can decide after a month to grant distribution to other outlets.

The publisher’s managing director, James Pembroke, said Tesco offered the company three times the distribution WHSmith’s could, and with less margins and little risk.

He said: “We’re basically contract publishers, so for us working for one client is very normal. We simply couldn’t have got the magazine off the ground without Tesco.”

Pembroke said that the arrangement was not strictly a client-contract publisher relationship, but that JP Publishing was a “supplier to Tesco – with total editorial independence”.

Xplode, which carries the Tesco logo above its barcode on the front cover, will be on sale every school holiday and half-term priced £3.99.
