Grampian TV has appointed news editor Craig Wilson as its new head of news and current affairs.
He succeeds Henry Eagles, who moved to sibling station Scottish TV as executive producer of its Scottish Premier League football highlights programme in July.
Previously senior producer at Grampian, Wilson joined the station in July 1990 as a reporter in news and sport in the Aberdeen newsroom. In November 1998, he moved onto the newsdesk as assistant programme editor, then programme editor for the station’s flagship early evening news programme, North Tonight.
He was appointed senior producer in the news and current affairs department in June 2001, before progressing to news editor. He played a central role, along with Eagles, in the station’s move to new premises and was responsible for establishing the new digital newsroom and introducing the desktop editing and tapeless production systems.
Derrick Thomson, Grampian TV’s managing director, said Wilson had been the “best candidate for the job in a shortlist of 10 heavyweights”.
“He outlined an excellent way forward for the programme in terms of increasing its reach and delivering a detailed news agenda,” Thomson added.
Wilson’s promotion leaves a vacancy for news editor, which he will appoint at the same time as he restructures the news team.
“He will be looking at the newsroom from top to bottom to make sure all the right people are in the right positions,” said Thomson.
