Welsh national morning paper the Western Mail has become the latest upmarket broadsheet to follow the lead of The Independent and go tabloid.
The Trinity Mirror-owned paper has also introduced new sections, supplements and columnists with the change, which took effect from last Thursday. These include a daily Coffee Break section, Health Wales every Monday, an expanded Golf Wales section on Fridays, a daily Readers’ Poll and a four-page television guide every weekday.
Editor Alan Edmunds said: “The new compact format allows us to deliver in-depth news, comment and analysis of the big issues impacting on Welsh lives in a more user-friendly fashion.
“It’s been put together in collaboration with our readers and we are really excited about it.”
He added: “The response from readers has been excellent, which shows how important the Western Mail is to Wales.
“Generally the reaction has been along the lines of ‘it’s just so much better – and so much more modern’.”
The Western Mail has an ABC circulation (Monday to Friday) of 44,470.
