Website links boost fledgling writing talents

Website greatreporter.com has just entered its third year of
promoting and selling the work of 2,000 registered journalists from
around the world.

Richard Powell, managing director of parent company Presswire Media,
launched the site in March 2003 from scratch. Then a freelance working
at the BBC, Powell wanted the site to be a showcase to market the work
of young journalists.

He said: “I started the site with no
database and no members, but people I knew, who built the BBC news
site, helped and encouraged me, and BBC world affairs editor John
Simpson agreed to write our inaugural piece for free to raise interest
and get us going.

“Many of the registered writers/members we have got published were new to professional journalism.

“Many
of them are journalism graduates feeling about in the dark in this
increasingly difficult environment for them to find work.

“But it is not just for newcomers we syndicate material from established journalists around the world.”

Customers
of the service have included The Independent, Evening Standard, BBC
News Online and UKTV interactive television, the Australian Financial
Review, Soak magazine in the US, The Week in India, The Sunday Herald
in Scotland and websites, including Handbag.com and iVillage.co.uk The
site carries interviews and advice from industry insiders.

The latest is Laura Trevelyan, BBC Political correspondent, on ‘How to make it as a network political TV reporter.’
