Urban lifestyle launch

By Press Gazette

A monthly urban lifestyle magazine aimed at encouraging positive attitudes among young black people has been launched by an independent publisher.

Profyle magazine covers fashion, lifestyle, travel and celebrity and social commentary and has a distribution of 20,000 in the UK, US and Asia.

The glossy magazine was set up by freelance journalist Cindy Okwera, 23, after she wrote her dissertation on black British journalism while studying journalism at the London College of Communication and felt disappointed by the attitude of black media.

‘My conclusion was that in titles such as New Nation, The Voice and Black Pride we’re always victims,’she said. ‘I felt we had to look at America to get that mass appeal, for us to celebrate that we are black and to showcase people who have done something, and not just sat there and gone on about getting stopped and searched.”

Okwera, who first started working on the magazine in 2006, now has a 16-strong team and has secured a deal with World Wide Magazine Distribution.
