The NUJ has staged a protest in Wales on behalf of staff at
Northcliffe Newspapers who are angered by cuts under the company’s Aim
Higher strategy.
Five Welsh Assembly members and an MP turned up
at the demonstration, along with representatives from the TUC in Wales
and about 40 other supporters.
NUJ Welsh organiser Jenny Lennox
said: “Since the company closed its Swansea print room, staff on the
South Wales Post have had to produce the paper a day before it comes
out, so it is a completely irrelevant publication. One journalist who
won employee of the month refused to have his picture taken for the
company wall chart in protest. Northcliffe are not filling vacant posts
– they’re really struggling to get the newspaper out.
“There is now only one full-time journalist covering the Welsh Assembly who mainly writes for the Liverpool Daily Post.
“We
wanted to show solidarity for the workers and show that the NUJ is
fighting for quality news and fighting against these cuts, which are
going to be devastating for the company as a whole.”
No one from Northcliffe was available for comment as Press Gazette went to press
