The free Warrington Mercury has been merged with sister paper the
Midweek Guardian seven years after Newsquest bought the title to be a
supplement to the paid-for Warrington Guardian.
Ten thousand copies have been slashed from the original combined distribution of 80,000.
Editorial
has always been provided by journalists working across all titles, and
no editorial positions will be made redundant as part of the move.
The
Mercury used to cater for the north of the borough, while the Guardian
was aimed at the more affluent southern readership. Both areas will now
be served by one publication, The Warrington Midweek.
Editor Nicola Priest said: “When we inherited the Mercury there was confusion with advertisers about us having two free titles.
“We
found they often preferred the long-standing Midweek Guardian. There
was a lot of duplication between the papers. We have used the best of
both titles, so I don’t think the readers will lose out.”
