Carter: promoted to editor-in-chief
Croydon Advertiser editor Ian Carter has been promoted to editor-in-chief of East Surrey and Sussex Newspapers.
The move follows the resignation of Surrey Mirror series editor Diane Flint and it means two editors will now effectively be replaced by one. It is the latest in a series of editorial cuts across Trinity Mirror’s regional and national newspapers.
Carter, 33, will oversee ten titles including the Surrey Mirror series, the Dorking and Leatherhead Advertiser, Croydon Advertiser and the Crawley News.
Flint has been involved with East Sussex and Surrey Newspapers for more than 30 years and now plans to undertake voluntary work overseas before starting an English and Art History degree at the University of Sussex. She is understood to have wanted new challenges following the sudden death of her husband Peter in May 2002.
Flint started her career as a reporter on the Horley News and was appointed editor-in-chief of the Surrey Mirror series in December 2000.
Carter joined the Croydon paper from the BBC in December 2002 and was previously assistant editor at the Argus in Brighton.
He said: “Everybody at ESSN will miss Diane greatly, and she will be a hard act to follow.”
He added: “We’ve got some real talent across the Croydon and Reigatebased titles. There will certainly be no loss of presence in either Croydon or Reigate. We’re committed to both areas, and I will be spending my time equally in each.”
