Trinity papers to star in Liverpool documentary

By Press Gazette

By Sarah Lagan

The Liverpool Daily Post and Liverpool Echo are
to be the stars of a documentary that will chart the history of the
city over the last 150 years through the eyes of the papers. A film
crew has traced the two Trinity Mirror title’s steps, including the
Post’s 150th anniversary celebrations in June, and interviewed staff,
past and present, about the day-to day workings of the titles as well
as some of the major stories they have worked on.

Daily Post
acting editor Mark Thomas, whose brainchild the documentary was along
with Northstar Television producer Ged Clarke, said: “We have had a
busy year of major events to celebrate this very significant milestone
in our history.

“This programme is a great chance for us to share
those celebrations with the viewing public of the north west, and at
the same time to give them an insight into our part in the recent
history of the region, and into how we produce our newspapers.”

Some
of the bigger events journalists talk about include Beatle-mania, the
Toxteth riots and Hillsborough disaster. More recently was the city’s
elevation into European Capital of Culture status and Liverpool FC’s
European Champions League victory.

Former Post & Echo
journalists interviewed in the two-part documentary, provisionally
named “Echoes of the Post”, include former-BBC political editor John
Sergeant and Daily Mirror columnist Brian Reade.

The programme, presented by former Brookside actor John McArdle, will be transmitted on Granada ITV on 4 and 11 October.
