Trinity Mirror has named Richard Williams as the new editor of its Cardiff-based evening paper the South Wales Echo.
Williams has spent most of his career with Trinity Mirror but for the last two years has been editor-in-chief of the Wrexham-based Evening Leader , which is owned by North Wales Newspapers.
He started his career with the Liverpool-based Daily Post in 1989 and rose to chief reporter, news editor, assistant editor and deputy editor.
He also spent a period as news editor of Wales on Sunday in 1995, which is part of Western Mail & Echo.
Williams was born in Wrexham and is a Welsh speaker. He replaces Alistair Milburn who announced his intention to leave the Echo after three years in September to set up his own PR business.
He said: “As a Welshman, it will give me great pride to be editing my capital city’s evening newspaper.
“I look forward to building on the work done by Alastair Milburn and the team over the past few years and developing the Echo’s well-known reputation for good journalism.”
The last six-month figure for Monday to Saturday sales was 59,200 (down four per cent year-on-year).
