The Times is launching a new comment blog and a downloadable late edition.
Daily comment blog Comment Central will be written and edited by Times comment editor Daniel Finkelstein and daily business briefing The Note will be edited by Phillip Robinson, who has come to the Times after editing the website for weekly newspaper Financial News.
Comment Central will build on the traditional role of comment editor, selecting the best writing for the newspaper and offering an online guide to opinion and comment on the internet.
Meanwhile The Note will be available on Times Online each day at 5pm. It will provide news, analysis and comment on the day’s biggest business stories and be available as a pdf file to print.
Finkelstein will give his personal opinion on comment on the web, as well as the inside track on what is being said all over the world from a wide variety of sources, including other newspapers.
As well as providing context to The Times and The Sunday Times comment pieces, he will interview the papers’ columnists about the issues they’ve selected and on what has shaped their view.
The blog will also tackle breaking news stories and direct readers to interesting comment relating to topics that are in the headlines.
Finkelstein said: “Blogging is an incredibly exciting form of journalism, especially in the field of comment. Just as the role of a newspaper is to filter and edit the best for the reader, the role of Comment Central will be to bring the online reader the most fascinating comment and analysis on the web. I will express my personal views on a subject, as well as bringing contrasting opinion to the table so that we continue to do our duty by the reader, making sure they are informed and entertained.”
Times business editor James Harding said: “The Note is a concise, opinionated summary of the day’s top business stories. It will provide the talking points of the day and the agenda for tomorrow. We want to provide news and views wherever you are – at work, at home and commuting in between. “
Before editing the Financial News website Robinson had been Times business news editor, Daily Telegraph’s associate city editor, Sunday Times deputy city editor and part of the start-up team of the Wall Street Journal Europe.
