When many were thinking the Lebedevs likely course of action with The Independent would be to ape the Evening Standard revolution and take the daily free, the Indy’s new owners confounded expectation and instead launched a new cut-price national newspaper.
Called i, the spin-off launched this week at the knock-down price of just 20p – however, news of the launch was met with a muted response across Fleet Street as chief execs and editors of rival titles digested the new, …er, digest version of The Independent.
