In journalism terms – it will be trial of century when next year some of the industry’s biggest names will stand accused of taking part in a grand conspiracy.
Yesterday eight former News of the World staffers were charged with multiple counts of conspiring to illegally intercept mobile phone voicemail messages. Those accused include former editors of the paper Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks who went on to become Downing Street spokesman and chief executive of News International respectively.
More phone-hacking prosecutions could yet follow and meanwhile the linked police investigations into bribery and computer hacking continue apace.
