Strike vote postponed at Bristol

By Press Gazette

NUJ members at the Bristol Evening Post and Western Daily Press have decided to delay a vote on strike action until the New Year.

Journalists at the two Northcliffe titles voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to allow more time for chapel officials to negotiate with the company over the proposed 36 redundancies.

The job cuts are due to take effect at the end of January as part of Northcliffe’s Aim Higher project to save £30 million over the next two years and involves the merging of editorial jobs on the Evening Post and Daily Press.

Union members wanted more time for discussions over outstanding issues. These include the final number of job losses which, the union said, the company has still not revealed and the future structure of departments, which is making it difficult for people to decide whether to opt for redundancy.

The NUJ claimed the company has not revealed how much staff are entitled to under enhanced pension arrangements.
