Spanish title to cash in on travel and property boom

By Press Gazette

A new magazine dedicated to Spain hits news-stands next month led by the woman who oversaw the launch of celebrity magazine OK! Ann Wallace is now group editor at Brooklands Magazines, publisher of Everything Spain.

Concentrating on travel and property, the 164-page title includes a “flipover” Spanish property section and is hoping to attract house buyers who are fed up with rising property levels in the UK and are considering moving to Spain.

It is also hoping to capitalise on the popularity of television programmes such as A Place in the Sun, No Going Back and Relocation, Relocation, Relocation which have prompted people to sell up and move abroad to warmer climates.

The launch follows the success of Everything France, also owned by Brooklands Magazines. It will have a wider remit than Everything France, targeting a slightly older audience, aged 40-plus, and featuring articles on people, food and drink and homes and gardens.

Wallace said: “We see the readership we’ll have as slightly older than Everything France. There is a huge interest in Spain and there will be a big holiday readership as well.”

Everything France underwent a relaunch in May with a lower cover price, more pages and a new monthly frequency.

According to its owner, half a million UK residents own homes in France, and UK buyers in Spain are currently outnumbering those in France by a ratio of seven to one.

Managing director Darren Styles said: “The Spanish marketplace is buoyant but, in publishing terms, somewhat immature. The available magazines have traditionally been owner-driven titles with bags of enthusiasm but less commercial nous – so we now see an opportunity to bring some more sophisticated publishing skills to bear.”

Like Everything France, Everything Spain will launch initially as a bimonthly with the aim of going monthly by mid-2004.

Sandra Monaghan, former editor of the Dubai-based Emirates Woman and deputy editor of Home & Country, is editor. The new title will have a cover price of £2.95 and print run of over 100,000. Styles said: “Everything Spain will build on the model of Everything France and reflect the two key drivers in this sector, namely travel and property, in a way that hasn’t been seen before: offering a reader – be they passing or regular – the standards they’d expect of most other developed magazine propositions.”
