One of Ireland’s oldest newspapers, The Anglo-Celt, has been acquired by Scottish group Dunfermline Press.
The purchase price for the Cavan title, which was founded in 1846, was €15m (£10.4m). Negotiated by the managing director of Dunfermline, Deirdre Romanes, the deal included a printing business, Celtrim Printing.
Last year, The Meath Chronicle was acquired by the Scottish group. The two papers will be part of the Celtic Media Group, which was set up by Dunfermline for its Irish interests.
The managing editor of The AngloCelt, Johnny O’Hanlon, said he expected the move to strengthen the paper’s position and help it to modernise further. Dunfermline is understood to have the backing of the Bank of Scotland and there’s speculation it may acquire further titles in the Republic.
