Sarah Richmond, who directed, filmed and edited her own television production, has won Young Journalist of the Year at the North West Mental Health Media Awards.
The 24-year-old was up against professional competition from soaps including Hollyoaks and Brookside and was the only student to be shortlisted. Her film, A Special Need to Achieve, focused on a group of sixth form students at Springfield Special School in Crewe, who embarked on a residential course at a school in the Wirral. Although thrilled, Richmond was surprised to win the award.
She said: “Considering I was up against a lot of experienced journalists, I didn’t expect this award.”
Richmond, who has just finished a masters degree in television production, has already seen her first commission broadcast by Granada.
She spent eight weeks working on her film doing all her own camera work, followed by many more hours of production and editing, using the college’s state of the art media suite.
Richmond was also shortlisted for an award in the TV awards category.
