Routledge quits NS

By Press Gazette

Daily Mirror political commentator Paul Routledge has quit his column on the New Statesman, writes Ruth Addicott.

Routledge has been a regular columnist in the magazine for five-and-a-half years and his decision was said to be “amicable”.

New Statesman editor Peter Wilby said: “We are very sorry to lose him, he has been a terrific columnist. We had a pleasant farewell lunch and I thought if I plied him with enough alcohol he might stay, but he wanted a rest.”

Wilby said he was not looking for a replacement and it is likely one of the existing columnists will get a wider brief. “Our view is that he is irreplaceable.

It wasn’t so much a Westminster column but a Paul Routledge column.”
