REX FEATURES FOUNDERS HONOURED AT AGENCY’S 50TH BIRTHDAY BASH

By Press Gazette

Rex Features founders Frank and Elizabeth Selby were presented with a sculpture of themselves, at a party in London to mark the picture agency’s 50th anniversary.

Since the couple founded the agency from their home in 1954, it has grown into an international company with hundreds of photographers on its books. The Selbys’ children, Mike, John and Sue, all work for Rex.

What’s On TV’s picture editor, Tony Smith, was among the 400 guests at the party.

He called Rex one of the last family bastions in the pictureagency field. “Everyone who works for Rex is part of that family,” he said. Rex staff were joined by guests from the worlds of newspapers, magazines, television, publishing and public relations. Many of Rex’s contributing photographers and past staff, who have gone on to successful careers in national newspapers and magazines, were also there to celebrate the half century.

Rex has marked its 50th anniversary by commissioning art installation “The World According to Rex” – an inflatable containing eight giant screens projecting some of the agency’s most iconic images. It will be on show on 12 and 13 May at the British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies’ Picture Buyers’ Fair at Islington Design Centre, London.
