Reuters NUJ journalists have voted in favour of strike action in an “informal” ballot, which follows plans to axe 35 editorial jobs in the UK.
Managers announced last week that jobs would go in pictures, graphics and sports results.
Some posts are being “outsourced” to Singapore and Toronto. The union fears that more jobs will be lost in December.
The NUJ conducted the informal ballot among members in the 250strong London editorial office.
They voted by 137 to 24 that they would be prepared to strike.
It is not a formal mandate for industrial action required by law.
NUJ national organiser for newspapers and agencies Barry Fitzpatrick said: “This is a very strong result that gives a crystal-clear message to Reuters’ management.
“Managers want to sack journalists with a proven track record of skill and expertise that have served the agency well.
“It is thanks to its journalists that Reuters enjoys the reputation it does in a highly competitive market,” added Fitzpatrick
