Reporting was responsible

By Press Gazette

I was surprised to read Mike Beevers’ letter (Press Gazette, 18 March).

He has clearly taken my comments about our recent newspaper sales performance completely out of context.

I
made reference to the case of missing Job Centre clerk Joanne Nelson to
emphasise my belief, based on solid evidence, that breaking news
remains a major reason to buy and read local newspapers.

We are
not embarrassed about selling newspapers and nor should we be when our
sales are based on compassionate and responsible journalism.

Our
coverage of the Joanne Nelson case has consistently reflected the
sensitivities of Joanne’s family and of the local community.

We
have also done everything possible to assist the police in their quest
to find Joanne and alleviate the anguish her family are suffering.
