Reader’s Digest and Newsweek hit new markets

By Press Gazette

Reader’s Digest and Newsweek are expanding overseas with the launch of new editions in Canada and France, writes Ruth Addicott.

Reader’s Digest has launched a magazine in Canada called Our Canada. The 68-page bimonthly will offer Canadians a platform to share their stories, pictures, memories and recipes. The company hopes to achieve a settle-down circulation of 200,000.

It is understood editorial costs are being kept to a minimum by using unpaid material from readers, who will receive a copy of the magazine or a box to store photos in return for their contributions.

Meanwhile, Newsweek has launched a special edition in France. Published in association with Newsweek and Lafayette Press, it launched last month with a print run of 100,000. Its publishers wanted to test the market to see if there was demand for a permanent edition of the news and current affairs weekly in the country with specific stories dedicated to France.
