Press Gazette to launch Magazine Journalism Awards

By Press Gazette

Press Gazette is launching a new set of awards which will be the first dedicated solely to recognising excellence among all UK magazine journalists.

The Magazine Journalism Awards (MJAs) will be a sister event to a "reinvigorated" Magazine Design Awards, which are now in their eighth year.

The MJAs will consist of nine categories, which include: Exclusive of the Year, Feature Writer of the Year, Interviewer of the Year, Columnist of the Year, News Reporter of the Year, Business Reporter of the Year and Reviewer of the Year.

A unique award for Subbing Team of the Year recognises excellence among the unsung heroes of journalism, and the Magazine Journalist of the Year award will be judged from the winners of the individual categories.

A final award, the Magazine Icon of the Year, will be decided by panels from the Magazine Design Awards and the Magazine Journalism Awards, who will nominate and vote on the person, or the brand, that has achieved iconic status in 2006.

This category does not require submitted entries, but will be selected from those setting the industry standards.

Press Gazette editor Ian Reeves said: "We've been busy at Press Gazette not only reinvigorating the MDAs but creating the MJAs, which we hope will celebrate the unsung heroes of the industry.

"I've long been conscious that although there are plenty of awards for magazine editors and publishers, the hard-working journalists under them do not often get the opportunity for a wider recognition of their talents.

"These new awards aim to put that right by shining the spotlight firmly on the writers and subs who are responsible for the wonderful content that keeps our magazine industry so vibrant.

"It also gives journalists on consumer, customer and business-to-business magazines the chance to pit their skills against each other."

The two awards will take place on the same night in a ceremony at a prestigious London venue, soon to be announced, later this year.

The MDAs have had two new categories added: Young Designer of the Year (under 26 years old) and a Magazine Designer of the Year Award for art editors and designers across customer, B2B and consumer magazines, which will honour the individual who has made the most impact.

Other awards include: Best Use of Typography, Best Use of Photography, Best Designed Feature Pages and separate awards for Best Designed Business-to-Business Magazine, Customer Magazine, Consumer Magazine (under 40,000) and Consumer Magazine (over 40,000), plus Best New Design/Redesign.

There will also be three new separate awards for the consumer, customer and B2B Front Covers of the Year.

For further details about both of these events see next week's edition of Press Gazette.
