Media Lawyer, the legal journal founded and edited by Tom Welsh, has been bought by the Press Association.
The bimonthly covers key media law events and developments in the industry and was founded by Welsh in 1996.
The magazine also provides a forum for discussing media law matters and is a focus for attempts to stem the flow of legislation limiting the freedom to report. Welsh, former editor of the North-West Evening Mail and the first director of Journalism Studies at City University, will stay on as editor.
He said: “I have the highest regard for the Press Association and am delighted the company has acquired Media Lawyer. I am keenly looking forward to working with the PA team.”
Mike Dodd, PA sub-editor and legal editor of PA’s website for journalists, PA Mediapoint, will join him as deputy editor. Walter Greenwood has agreed to continue as honorary consultant.
Welsh is joint editor of McNae’s Essential Law for Journalists and is an authority on UK media law.
Steven Brown, managing director of PA, said: “The acquisition is part of the continuing process to reinforce PA’s supporting role at the heart of the media.”
