The winner of this year’s Observer Hodge Photographic Award is Ania Dabrowska, a 29-year-old media and communications graduate.
She won the award – which carries a £3,000 prize plus an expenses-paid photo assignment for The Observer – for her portfolio “Freedom is a big word: South Africa, 2003”.
Runner-up was Dominick Tyler, a photographer from London, wins second prize for “Exodus of the Innu”. Third was Niamh Loftus, a freelance photographer from Cardiff, for “Settled Travellers”.
Alfredo D’Amato, a third-year documentary photography student, won the student prize for “Cocalari Iron People”. Mona Moe Holhjem, a photography student at the Kent Institute of Art and Design, was runnerup for “Princesses, Portraits of Norwegian Women”.
Dabrowska’s work, along with the highly commended entries is now being displayed in an exhibition that will run until 5 September.
The award was set up in 1986 in memory of photojournalist David Hodge, who died as a result of injuries received covering the Brixton riots.
