Paper splashes out on new columnist

By Press Gazette

Racehorse trainer John Berry has joined Newmarket Extra as a columnist – and provided the racing paper with this month’s splash.

“Our editorial has been rather too cosy and pro-establishment since we launched in December,” said publisher Philip Osborn. “John Berry will remedy that. He’s one of the new breed of trainers and isn’t worried about ruffling feathers.”

In his column Berry attacks the plan to establish an all-weather track at Newmarket, which most of the town’s trainers have approved.

His comment that “the exalted status Newmarket enjoys will be damaged by a stream of low-grade racing” has been used as the peg for the paper’s lead story.
