Western Morning News editor Barrie Williams has accepted an award from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in recognition of the newspaper’s coverage of the RNLI’s activities.
The award was presented by RNLI chief executive Andrew Freemantle at a special ceremony at London’s Barbican Centre.
Freemantle praised the Plymouthbased morning paper for its coverage of rescues and its campaigning articles which he said helped raise awareness and funds for the charity.
Williams said: “The RNLI is part of the fabric of the community in the West Country and we regard maximum coverage of its activities as a duty.” The WMN’s current appeal to raise funds to train lifeboat crews in the West Country, stands at £42,000.
There was also an award for television documentary, For those in Peril, about lifeboat crews, commissioned by BBC South West and made by Longbow Productions. Producer Tom Keene and BBC South West editor of current affairs Simon Willis accepted the award.
