The Association of Zimbabwe Journalists in the UK has launched an
annual award to be given to a courageous Zimbabwean journalist.
The
first award has gone to the late Mark Chavhunduka, editor of The
Standard , who was arrested and tortured together with reporter Ray
Choto, after publishing a controversial story about a coup attempt by
Zimbabwe’s military.
He died in 2002.
Welcoming the launch
of the award, worth £1,000, Forward Maisokwadzo, Association interim
chairman, said: “Journalists in this country are lucky enough to enjoy
freedoms that those in countries such as Zimbabwe can only look upon
with envy. Mark left a legacy in the profession and this has to be
maintained by upcoming journalists in Zimbabwe.”
Association
secretary Sandra Nyaira said the journalists would also want to find
ways to help colleagues in Zimbabwe whose newspapers, such as the Daily
News and The Daily News on Sunday were closed by the government.
