New movie about murdered Guerin set for July release

By Press Gazette

The film Veronica Guerin, based on the life and death of the Sunday Independent crime reporter, is set to have its world premiere in Dublin in early July.

The film, directed by Joel Schumacher, goes on cinema release throughout the Republic on 11 July followed by the UK on 8 August and elsewhere in Europe later in the year.

Schumacher’s film stars Cate Blanchett as Guerin. He said he had just shown it to Veronica’s mother, who was “thrilled with it”.

About the journalistic icon which Guerin has become, Schumacher said he “loved her drive and the way she stood up to drug barons and wouldn’t take shit from anybody. Plus she was flawed. She wasn’t a saint, she was this real human being who was quite manipulative and driven.” This is the second film to portray the murdered journalist. John MacKenzie’s When the Sky Falls failed to secure a cinema release in the US.
