Times foreign editor Bronwen Maddox has changed job title to become chief foreign commentator.
As foreign editor she has already been writing a daily commentary piece called “foreign editor's briefing” while Martin Fletcher, as foreign news editor, has had more of a hands-on editing role.
In the new set-up, Roland Watson has been promoted to foreign editor – taking over from Fletcher who is to become a writer-at-large contributing across the paper.
Two weeks ago, long serving Daily Telegraph foreign editor Alan Philps abruptly left the paper.
His departure followed the appointment of Con Coughlin as executive foreign editor.
Watson has worked as a foreign correspondent for The Times for several years and more recently has been a leader writer and contrubuted pieces on UK politics.
