Nepalese rebels murder journalist

By Press Gazette

Reporters Without Borders expressed shock at the gruesome murder by Nepalese Maoist rebels of a journalist whom they tied up before publicly cutting his throat.

Gyanendra Khadka, 35, worked for the government news agency Rastriya Samachar Samiti and was also a teacher in a village school north east of Kathmandu. He was dragged from the school in the middle of a class by the rebels on 7 September.

Khadka, a former correspondent for Samacharpatra, one of Nepal’s biggest newspapers, was well known for his articles in national and local papers.

The press freedom organisation expressed its grave concern about violence towards journalists from all sides since the Maoist CNP-M party ended a ceasefire on 27 August.

It called on political and military leaders and the Maoist rebels to halt the attacks and appealed to the leader of the Maoist Communist Party to find and punish those who killed Khadka.
