Murtagh takes Irish Times job

The former editor of the Sunday Tribune, Peter Murtagh, has been
appointed managing editor of the Irish Times with responsibility for
investigations.

Murtagh was security correspondent of the paper
in the 1980s when he moved to London to become news editor of The
Guardian. He became Sunday Tribune editor in 1994.

In other Irish
Times appointments, Patrick Smith, former European correspondent and
Washington correspondent, has been appointed foreign editor.

News editor John Maher, who has worked for the paper since 1992, is now editor of the Opinion section.
