MPs are being urged to back a campaign to persuade newspaper employers to increase the low pay of journalists.
Burton MP Janet Dean and David Kidney, MP for Stafford, have put
down a Commons motion contrasting the £10,000 starting salary of many
graduate trainee journalists with the £20,300 average graduates earn
entering other industries.
The motion calls on the newspaper
industry to work with the NUJ to create a satisfactory pay structure
that recognises academic qualifications, experience and “dedication to
the industry”.
“Some senior journalists earn as little as £20,000
a year, forcing many experienced members of the profession to seek
alternative employment,” Dean and Kidney complained.
