Metro International pushes into Mexico

By Press Gazette

Dominic Ponsford

Global free newspaper giant Metro International has launched a new edition in Mexico City.

It means Metro now has 69 editions in 93 major cities, 21 countries and 19 languages.

The Swedish firm is expected to be one of the companies issuing
a tender for a new free afternoon newspaper to be distributed at London
transport stations. It currently has no titles in the UK but does
collaborate with Associated Newspapers-owned title Metro on advertising
deals.

Mexico City is the world’s second largest urban area with a
population of over 19 million. Some 130,000 daily copies are being
distributed under the name Publimetro.

Metro CEO Pelle Tornberg said: ‘Publimetro, with a circulation of
130,000, is the number one daily newspaper in Mexico City, based on
national circulation figures for Mexico.

‘Mexico City is one of the most populated metropolitan areas in the
world and we are confident that the Metro format will appeal to its
young, active inhabitants. Our regional footprint in the Americas has
been extended even further with today’s launch and, together with our
strong local partners in Mexico, we look forward to accelerating the
development of this business.”
