Meltwater versus the NLA: Legal battle with ‘dramatic implications for internet ecosystem’

Media monitoring company Meltwater says its High Court defeat against the Newspaper Licensing Agency could have “dramatic implications for the entire internet ecosystem in the UK”.

It means that the NLA has the right to charge Meltwater for its use of aggregated news headlines and story intros. The ruling could have massive implications for all news aggregators – such as Google News – but it is just the first stage in what could be a long legal battle.

Meltwater has been given leave to appeal the ruling and is also set to fight the NLA at the Copyright Tribunal on the same issue.
