McIntyre to head Jerusalem bureau

By Press Gazette

The Independent’s chief political commentator, Donald McIntyre, is leaving Canary Wharf to head up the newspaper’s Jerusalem bureau, writes Dominic Ponsford.

McIntyre joined The Independent when it was launched in 1988 and with the exception of a three-andahalf year break has been there ever since. He has been in his current post since 1996.

Editor Simon Kelner said: “Don has done the political beat for a number of years and he is possibly the most insightful and well respected commentator in public life. But he has always wanted to have a foreign posting.”

The Independent’s current Jerusalem correspondent, Phil Reeves, is leaving the paper to work for Public Service Broadcasting in the US.

Steve Richards, who covers politics for The Independent on Sunday, is to take over from McIntyre. Tony Blair’s biographer, John Rentoul, has switched from chief leader writer on The Indepndent to chief political commentator on The IoS.
