Although his now famous arm-waving approach to reporting has been noticeably toned down in recent months, BBC political editor Andrew Marr was named Best TV Performer in a Non-Acting Role for the second year running at the Broadcasting Press Guild’s annual Television and Radio Awards last week.
The guild, consisting of more than 100 journalists who specialise in reporting on the media, presented their 29th annual awards at the London’s Theatre Royal.
In the radio category Sue Lawley, presenter of Desert Island Discs since 1988, was broadcaster of the year and Radio 4’s Sunday morning current affairs programme, Broadcasting House, was voted Programme of the Year.
The guild’s most prestigious personal award, the Harvey Lee Award for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting, went to Brian Lapping, former ITV documentary producer and director of his own production company, Brook Lapping Productions.
The company is best known for documentaries such as BBC2’s 1995 series The Death of Yugoslavia and The Fall of Milosevic, shown last year.
