Several Trinity Mirror Cheshire titles have joined forces with the
police in a bid to make Halloween safer and more enjoyable this year.
The
papers, including the Whitchurch Herald and Runcorn Weekly News, have
launched a poster campaign as part of a West Mercia Police clampdown on
a minority of young trick or treaters who see the celebration as a
chance to get cash or gifts, but take exception to being turned away
empty handed.
The papers printed posters for people to display if
they do not want to be visited. Herald editor Andrew Bowen said: “The
idea is for our readers to stick the posters up in their windows so the
kids can see when they’re not welcome. It is primarily to protect the
elderly and vulnerable who can be terrified of young kids banging on
their doors and virtually demanding money.”
Children are being encouraged through the campaign to venture out in groups accompanied by an adult.
