Mail aids victims of hurricane Ivan

By Press Gazette

The Birmingham Evening Mail has responded to concern from the city’s West Indian community by launching an appeal to help victims of Hurricane Ivan.

Last week the storm killed at least 57 people in the islands of Jamaica and Grenada.

The Evening Mail has teamed up with the local West Indian Community Association and the Jamaican Cultural Association, and is collecting food and other supplies as well as cash.

The supplies will be distributed via the Red Cross.

Former West Bromwich Albion and England footballer Cyrille Regis has thrown his weight behind the paper’s appeal by helping out at one of the collection points Deputy editor Colin Clark said: “We didn’t have to ask Cyrille. As soon as he realised we were doing the appeal he was on the phone offering to help.

Birmingham has a huge West Indian population and, after just a few days, it was obvious people were really rallying to the cause.”
