Former Daily Mail news sub-editor Andrew Lynch has joined the World Association of Newspapers in Paris as editorial director of its Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project.
The project analyses operational and strategic developments in the press.
WAN, the global organisation for the newspaper industry, represents 18,000 newspapers, including 72 national newspaper associations.
“This is the perfect opportunity for me to learn more about the advertising, marketing and technological sides of the industry,” Lynch said.
“Research in the newspaper industry needs to make big advances, and SFN is acting as a driving force behind those advances.
“I am also looking forward to working with SFN director Jim Chisholm, who is a fountain of knowledge about the industry.”
Of the Mail, Lynch said: “It’s been a great privilege working on a newspaper that is at the height of its professional powers.”
Lynch joined the Mail in 2002, having spent the previous 10 years in Hong Kong as deputy night editor of the South China Morning Post and then editor-in-chief of The Standard and the Hong Kong iMail, a tabloid daily he launched in 2000.
He also founded, published and edited Asian Newspaper Focus, a regional magazine for the newspaper industry, from 1995 to 1999.
Since last year he has edited the magazine on behalf of Ifra Asia, which now owns the title, travelling around the region in his spare time from the Mail.
From 1990 to 1992, Lynch was night editor of The Sunday Telegraph in London following spells subbing at The Guardian and the Financial Times.
He began his career in 1984 as a reporter and sub-editor at the Evening Post newspaper in Bristol, where he still lives.
