Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan’s son Kojo is suing The Sunday
Times for up to £250,000 following a story about the UN oil-for-food
row.
Kojo claims a story headlined “Kofi Annan’s son ‘admits’ oil
dealing” was defamatory. He is also seeking an injunction banning the
repetition of allegations against him.
Kojo, who is being
represented by Schillings, has been given special permission to sue
without his home address, provided that his solicitors provide a letter
giving details of his usual address.
Sunday Times managing editor Richard Caseby said: “We are going to make a robust defence of our story.”
On Tuesday, Kojo Annan was criticised by an inquiry into the oil-for-food affair.
Kojo, who lives in Nigeria, joined the Swiss inspection company Contecna in 1995 and worked for it until 1998.
According
to the report, Contecna continued to pay Kojo £1,330 a month between
1999 and 2004 to prevent him working for a rival company.
During this time Contecna was hired by the UN to check and approve goods entering Iraq as part of the oil-for-food programme.
