Kent paper makes a great save

By Press Gazette

A year-long campaign launched by the Gravesend Reporter has helped to safeguard the future of a local football club.

The
Reporter last year discovered that League One team Gillingham planned
to build a new stadium and leisure complex on Gravesend and Northfleet
FC’s home turf.

Over the year, the Archant London title has
launched petitions, secured a string of exclusives and printed lively
letters to help convince the local council to back “The Fleet” in its
bid to stop “The Gills” from moving into the area.

The paper has
now revealed that the plan has been thrown out by the local council.
Its campaign also led The Fleet to draw up plans for its own proposals
to build a new stadium run by its own management team.

Kentish
Times Newspapers group editor Melody Ryall said: “This is terrific news
for Reporter readers and supporters of The Fleet.”
