The Journal, Newcastle, has relaunched with a new masthead and a new look to its news, features and sports pages.
“The aim is to make the paper easier to read and more entertaining, without compromising on the quality that we already offer,” said The Journal’s new deputy editor Graham Pratt, recently promoted from assistant editor.
He has been working on the relaunch project for the past few months. “The new-look Journal introduces a lot more white space to stop stories looking cluttered, but without dropping the number we use,” he said. “We’ve also carried the template into the sports pages, but given them their own sans serif font to give them a modern feel.”
There have been improvements to Primetime, the daily TV and entertainment guide, to include more on the region’s arts, alongside the Newcastle-Gateshead bid for European Capital of Culture status in 2008.
The revamped morning is introducing more interactivity with readers by relaunching its Direct Line service, a place for them to sound off on issues and get their consumer problems resolved.
Pratt said feedback from the paper’s 101,000 readers has “so far been very positive and we hope this will be reflected in our circulation figures”.
