Emap's business and construction divisions have had at least 12 staff axed as part of a cost cutting and restructuring exercise.
The company's recent trading update for the financial year 2005/6 said the company had experienced "tough conditions" in the second half of the year.
It states that while "strong underlying growth" is expected for Emap's B2B division, this will be partially offset by deterioration in recruitment revenue.
In its business division, Emap Maclaren, nine of the redundancies are thought to stretch across marketing, exhibitions, sales and PA work, with three job cuts involving editorial.
These include editor of monthly European Plastics News, Lou Reade, and technology reporter on Plastics and Rubber Weekly, Julie Bieles. The third editorial redundancy is believed to be on H&V News.
At New Civil Engineer, the redundancies are part of a restructuring with senior positions going — production editor, art editor and technical editor — to strengthen its news agenda. The publication is now in the process of recruiting a designer.
An Emap spokesperson said: "In order to ensure that Emap's communications construction division is in the best shape to meet the future needs of our customers, it has been necessary to go into consultation with a small number of our employees (15 out of a total Emap communications staff of 1,300) about their current roles.
"However, as part of that restructure, we also plan on making some new roles available. Wherever possible we will endeavour to re-deploy those affected.
At this stage we are unable to give total numbers of redundancies as we are still in consultation with those people whose roles are potentially affected.
Preliminary results for 2005/6 will be announced towards the end of this month."
Rumours that redundancies are also taking place across Emap Healthcare titles — which includes Health Service Journal that recently celebrated its 6,000th issue — are unfounded, according to mother of chapel, Emma Dent.
She said: "We have been told not to expect any [redundancies] for the time being."
