Jersey spells out its support for Asia

By Press Gazette

The
Jersey Evening Post organised a mass get-together of islanders to
express their support for the regions devastated by the tsunami.

Five
thousand island inhabitants stood together to spell out “side by side”
along a stretch of beach and were photographed from the air. The
picture has been sent to newspapers and media agencies throughout
South-East Asia.

The island, which has a population of 85,000,
has raised almost £2m for the British Red Cross disaster relief appeal;
Jersey’s government donated £500,000 and the public provided the rest
through a series of fund-raising events.

Chief reporter Anthony
Lewis said: “We are a sea-dependent community, like many of those hit
by the disaster. This was our way of saying that we stand together with
those communities not just now but for the long term and that we will
do whatever we can to help.”
