The war in Iraq and the fall of Saddam have once again dominated the nominations for a major news award, writes Wale Azeez.
Channel 4 News, BBC One’s Ten O’Clock News, BBC Two’s Newsnight and Sky News have been shortlisted for the 2004 Bafta Television award for news coverage.
Nominated in the current affairs category are ITV’s Breaking The Silence: Truth and Lies in the War on Terror – A Special Report by John Pilger; The Fall of Milosevic, by Ten Alp’s Brook Lapping Productions unit for BBC Two; Channel 4’s Terror in Moscow, produced by Mentorn; and BBC One’s The Secret Policeman – already the winner of two RTS awards.
Nominated for the Flaherty documentary award are BBC One’s Lager, Mum and Me from the One Life series; Pompeii: The Last Day, also from BBC One; BBC Two’s My Family and Autism; and ITV’s Real Life: Being Terri by Anglia Television.
Spectator editor and Daily Telegraph columnist Boris Johnson is nominated for the best entertainment performance award for his stint as guest presenter on Have I Got News For You. Actor Bill Nighy is nominated as best actor for his role as a national newspaper editor in the BBC One drama State of Play.
